Mark Clark meeting in West Ashley first of final three on road project

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has scheduled five public hearings concerning the recommended preferred alternative for the extension of the proposed I-526 (Mark Clark Expressway) from its current endpoint at Savannah Highway (US 17) to the existing James Island Connector interchange at Folly Road.  The remaining meetings are:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 7, West Ashley High School, 4060 Wildcat Blvd., Charleston
  • Wednesday, Sept.  8, James Island Charter High School, 1000 Fort Johnson Road, Charleston
  • Thursday, Sept. 9, St. John's High School, 1518 Main Road, Charleston

At each public hearing, the first part of the meeting will be conducted in an "open house" format between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.  Interested persons may attend the open house at any time, at which representatives will be available to answer questions regarding the proposed project. Maps and drawings of the proposed recommended preferred alternative will be available and citizens may submit comments regarding the possible social, economic and environmental effects of the project.

A formal hearing will begin at 6 p.m., with presentations by SCDOT, the Federal Highway Administration and US Army Corps of Engineers. Immediately following, citizens may make formal, verbal comments regarding the proposed project. Those persons wishing to speak at the formal hearing may sign up prior to 6 p.m. at the meeting.
