State DOT releases businesses targeted in 526 expansion

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - State Department of Transportation officials Thursday evening released the names of the four businesses targeted for closure as part of the I-526 expansion project.

The possible closures depend on the plan's passage.

Executive Director of the DOT Buck Limehouse said three businesses on Highway 17 in West Ashley and one on Johns Island could have to relocate. The McDonald's at 2050 Savannah Hwy., the Motel 6 at 2058 Savannah Hwy., the former location of a golf shop and a BP gas station on Johns Island could all be forced to close their doors and relocate, Limehouse said.

Thursday was the final public hearing for the proposal, but transportation officials are still taking comments on the plan until Sept. 30.

The plan is not final and Limehouse said the route could change after the comment period.

If the current draft of the proposal is approved, the interstate would stretch onto Johns Island with two exits on River Road before going over James Island and meeting with the connector.
