CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The organizers of the James Island Connector Run have announced changes for the November 6 event. The changes were made to provide a better experience for runners, as well as to make the event more fun for participants and spectators.
The route will change in order to give runners more time to warm up before hitting the first hill of the connector. The race will now begin in Cannon Park on Bennett Street. Participants will make a right onto Barre Street and then a left onto Calhoun Street before making their way to the bridge.
The 2010 race will be the first to offer cash awards. The top five finishers in the men's and women's divisions will be rewarded. The top finisher will get $250, second place will win $150, third will receive $100, fourth and fifth will get $75 and $50 respectively.
Free beer will now be included at the post-race party in addition to bagels, muffins, and fruit. All participants will get a long sleeve t-shirt with their race packet.
All proceeds from the race will benefit the Gavalas Kolanko Foundation, which awards college scholarships to students with disabilities. The foundation has presented 38 scholarships to Lowcountry students since 1999.
