Summerville man charged for failing to register as sex offender

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - A Summerville man was charged in federal court Wednesday for failing to register as a sex offender, a US Attorney's Office release stated.

Timothy McGuire, 44, was charged after he moved from New York to Summerville and failed to register as a sex offender in his new community, said US Attorney Bill Nettles. He is required by federal law to register.

According to the New York State Sex Offender Registry, McGuire was convicted of 1st degree sexual abuse of a 6-year-old girl.

Nettles said the maximum penalty McGuire faces is a $250,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.

The case was investigated by the US Marshals Service and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.
