Suspect can't elude police in foot race, arrested on gun, drug charges

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A North Charleston man was arrested on drug and gun charges after he ran from police officers Thursday night.

Deshawn Recordo Rivers, 33, of Moncks Corner was arrested and charged with trafficking ecstasy, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, and having a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

According to a police report, a patrolling officer spotted a black man sitting in a car outside the Owner's Box restaurant on Rivers Avenue. When he approached the vehicle, the man, later identified as Rivers, jumped out of the car and approached the officer.

The officer smelled marijuana and asked Rivers how much he was holding, the report stated. Rivers said he only had a blunt. When Rivers was informed that he was under arrest, he started running. The officer pulled his taser and shot Rivers with it, but the electrodes only connected with Rivers' clothing, rendering it ineffective.

The officer gave chase and had to jump several fences as Rivers tried to make his way on to Easy Street. By then a second officer had arrived and was able to detain Rivers.

During a search of Rivers' car, officers found a Crown Royal bag with 120 ecstasy pills, several bags of marijuana, a digital scale and a semi-automatic .40-caliber handgun.
