67-year-old man shot, killed in front of downtown Charleston church

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police are investigating a deadly shooting near Amherst and Hanover streets Tuesday morning.

According to Charleston police, shots were fired around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday. Police say the incident happened in front of the St. Johns Episcopal Chapel in downtown Charleston.

The Charleston County coroner identified 67-year-old John Jenkins as the victim.

Police do not have any suspects in custody at this time. Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood, talking to possible witnesses to try and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

This homicide is the fourth on peninsular Charleston in the past month.
