BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Beaufort County's former clerk of court is set to be tried on charges she embezzled more than $23,000 from public accounts.
Solicitor Duffie Stone says opening statements are scheduled Tuesday for former Beaufort County Clerk of Court Elizabeth Smith.
Smith resigned after she was indicted in July 2009. A month later, Smith pleaded not guilty to using public money to buy insurance policies for family members and making payments on a home on Pawleys Island.
