Unemployment in SC jumps to 11 percent in August

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's unemployment rate jumped to 11 percent last month, up from a revised 10.7 percent in July.

The Department of Employment and Workforce said Tuesday the number of out-of-work residents increased and the number of people with jobs dropped.

The state's labor force increased slightly to 2.15 million, ending a five-month slide. There were about 31,000 fewer workers in August than a year earlier.

The national unemployment rate was up 0.1 percentage points in August, to 9.6 percent.

Government jobs increased 22,300 for the month as teachers and other school employees went back to work. There were 3,300 fewer tourism jobs.

Marion County continued to have the highest unemployment rate at 19.8 percent. Lexington County again had the lowest rate at 8.6 percent.
