Man who jumped off bridge still missing

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Rescue crews have been unable to locate a missing swimmer who went missing near the Ashley River Bridges late Tuesday night.

The Coast Guard was notified at approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday that three men jumped off the Route 17 Bridge and two of the three men swam to a local dock. Jackie L. Washington, 22, of Charleston, did not make it to shore and was last seen treading water south of the Ashley River Bridge near the James Island Connector.

The Coast Guard launched a 25-foot rescue boat crew from Station Charleston and an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew from Air Facility Charleston. Rescuers searched all day Wednesday, but were unable to locate Washington.

Washington was one of 10 Wando High School students charged in connection with two armed robberies in Mount Pleasant. Washington plead guilty in 2008 to serving as a "lookout" during the armed robbery of a Food Lion grocery store. Washington did serve time, but received a shorter sentence because he was tried and sentenced as a youthful offender.

Washington was a former running back for the Wando High School football team. According to a police report, Washington works at Barbara Jeans, a Market Street restaurant.

The Coast Guard asks anyone with information regarding this search to please contact Coast Guard Sector Charleston operations center at 843-740-7050.
