NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Two of the most powerful Democrats in the country make a stop in North Charleston.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn were honored guests at the NAACP Freedom Fundraiser. Pelosi and Clyburn both were welcomed with open arms by the NAACP.
"Quite an honor to have them to come and say what they're going to say about politics that will make out state better," said Marie Simpson, an active supporter of the NAACP.
Dot Scott, President of the Charleston branch of the NAACP, said she had specific plans in mind when she invited Pelosi.
"To get someone that espouses the same goals of the NAACP and someone who can get the people in the seat because it is a fundraiser," she said.
Pelosi packed the house, but along with the crowds came the protestors.
Mark Powell gathered with others outside of a luncheon Pelosi hosted earlier in the day. He said the people protesting are regular South Carolinians.
"They're appalled by this Washington power grab; they're horrified by the mounting debt and deficit," Powell said.
Rep. Clyburn came to Pelosi's defense saying, "Those people out there really ought to get a life, they really ought to. It doesn't make sense. You're not going to change anyone's mind."
