1 dead after car hits tree off I-26 in Berkeley County

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - One person died after a single-car accident late Sunday night on Interstate 26.

The accident happened near mile marker 189 on I-26 around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to the Berkeley County Coroner's Office, a 2004 Nissan sedan was traveling east on I-26 when it ran off the left side of the roadway and hit a tree. There was heavy rain in the area during the time of the accident.

The passenger in the front seat was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy coroner. A seatbelt was in place. The driver and a passenger in the back seat were transported to a local hospital.

Berkeley County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury identified the victim as 21-year-old Angela Moultrie of Mt. Pleasant.

The accident is under investigation by the Berkeley County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
