DHEC closes shellfish beds along coast due to heavy rains

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has closed several shellfish harvesting areas along the coast due to the recent heavy rains.

All shellfish harvesting areas in Georgetown and Horry counties have been closed.  The beds in northern Charleston County between the South Santee River and Moore's Landing.  Other areas of the state affected include beds around Hilton Head and Pinckney islands in Beaufort County.

DHEC officials say the harvesting areas will remain closed until testing shows bacteria levels in the water have returned to safe levels.
