Bomb squad called after James Island man finds possible Civil War shell

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) – A James Island man says he dug up a Civil War bomb shell in his back yard.

Tony Peaton thinks he found a piece of artillery from the Civil War. The round piece of metal is about a foot long.

"I was doing a little bit of construction work in my back yard, a little bit of trenching and the trencher, when I hit something it spit a bomb on the ground," Peaton said. "Then I had to figure out what to do with it."

Peaton said he called Charleston police, who called the bomb squad to check on it.

Peaton lives in the Seaside Plantation neighborhood, which is not far from where the battle of Secessionville played out.

Confederate troops fought back the Union Army on James Island in 1862.
