Two Berkeley County deputies complete elite drug training program

MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - Two Berkeley County Sheriff's Deputies recently completed intensive drug recognition training in both Columbia, SC and Arizona.  Corporal Lonnie Mizzell and Coporal James Elrod were among 17 trainees from SC and Georgia to be selected for the intensive training.

The deputies work on the county's Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (HEAT) team.  The training received by Mizzell and Elrod will help them better identify impaired motorists which, in turn, will make roadways safer.

According to Berkeley County Sheriff's officials, since the HEAT team has been operating, the county has seen a dramatic decrease in traffic fatalities in the county.  In 2009, Berkeley County had 38 DUI-related traffic fatalities, and as of the end of July 2010, the county has registered only three such deaths.  Sheriff's officials attribute that drop to the county's stepped-up efforts in getting impaired drivers off the road.
