CHARLESTON,SC (WCSC) - "They have been a little out of control. I've been catching myself itching a lot more than usual lately," Amanda Holloway said about pesky mosquitoes.
The mosquito problem has been rampant lately. Donna Odom with Charleston County mosquito control says the issue only got worse after heavy rain hit the Lowcountry a few weeks ago, coupled with the high tides and hot weather.
"We are trying to get to everybody as soon as we can, but we are aware of how bad they are right now," Odom said.
At this time last year, mosquito control had only about 22 service requests. By Monday, the center had more than 150.
"We have been working seven days a week, full time. We have done a lot of standing water treatments, which we call larvaciding. We have been treating by plane as well as by ground," Odom said.
The hope is to put a handle on the problem soon. As the cooler weather rolls in most of the mosquito problems will die down. That makes people like Brad McDaniel happy.
"Being from Virginia the mosquitoes are not really as bad so its kind of an adjustment," McDaniel said.
