Deputies: Clerk locks would-be beer thief in store

ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) - A would-be beer thief was outsmarted by a quick thinking store clerk Friday afternoon, according to deputies.

Ronald Oneal Baxley Jr. is in custody charged with petit theft after trying to steal 3 cases of Budweiser from the Easy Shop on Neeses Highway.

According to an incident report, the 38-year-old walked into the Easy Shop around 3:30 Friday afternoon and went straight to the refrigerated area of the store.  Once there, Baxley grabbed 3 cases of beer and attempted to leave the store without paying, according to deputies.

As Baxley was trying to leave one of the clerks locked the doors and trapped Baxley inside, according to the report.  Baxley put the beer down and pleaded to be let go. After a clerk grabbed the beer, the doors were unlocked so customers could leave the store.

A clerk followed Baxley out of the store and got his license plate number.  Deputies, familiar with the suspect, had a few ideas on where to look for Baxley.  He was tracked down less than an hour later and arrested without incident.

Baxley was released from jail Saturday on a $470.00 surety bond.
