CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The plan to extend Interstate 526 is not a dead deal just yet.
A Charleston County Council committee voted to continue research on road safety and the extension at a meeting Tuesday night.
The county would ask the Department of Transportation to come up with new ways to complete the extension project and make improvements to existing roads.
The new proposal would remove the James Island portion of the project. Originally, the council wanted to link the end of I-526 with the James Island Connector at Folly Road. That part of the project drew a lot of public criticism.
