CLINTON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper has shot and killed a man who attacked the officer during a traffic stop in Laurens County.
Multiple media outlets reported the 22-year-old man died about 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. His name was not released while authorities notified relatives.
Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain says the man attacked the trooper with a sharp object about 3 p.m. during a traffic stop on Interstate 26 near I-385.
Patrol spokesman Sid Gaulden says Lance Cpl. J.K. Tester has been placed on non-patrol duties while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates.
Coroner Nick Nichols says an autopsy is planned Friday.
Chastain says the trooper suffered what appeared to be cuts and minor injuries to his neck.
