GEORGETOWN, S.C. (AP) - Riders are circulating a petition to say nay to a ban on horseback riding on Georgetown County beaches.
Horses are banned from the beach during spring and summer, but can use the beach in fall and winter. A new proposal would imposed a year-round ban after complaints about horses leaving manure on the beach and trampling dunes.
Sandy Hill of the Georgetown Saddle Club says most horseback riders only ride along the surf line and most clean up after their horses. She says those who don't are people who rent horses.
There was a similar attempt to ban horses about a decade ago.
A final vote on the ban has been postponed but riders plan to attend Tuesday's county council meeting to tell members how they feel.
