CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A judge sentenced a man to 30 years in prison for the May 2009 murder of a homeless woman in downtown Charleston.
James Nehiley, 61, pled guilty Monday to killing a homeless woman and leaving her body behind a Nassau Street home. Janice Case, 53, was found behind a home on 97 Nassau St. on May 15, 2009.
Witnesses said she didn't have any clothes on, appeared badly beaten and was partially covered with a green blanket. Police said she was strangled to death with bruises on her face. Police also said Nehiley was also homeless.
The judge told Nehiley that he will serve a full 30-year sentence without the option of parole.
Nehiley was scheduled to go on trial Monday, but opted to plead guilty instead. Given his age, Nehiley will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.
