MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt announced two donations Wednesday, one of which will help make deputies' jobs safer, and one that helped some scouts attend a statewide law enforcement competition.
With the bad economy affecting all sectors, the Sheriff's Office has had to make decisions about balancing the needs of the office and how many tax dollars it can spend. Local businessman Harold Dukes stepped in and donated money to the Sheriff's Office that helped it avoid cutting programs, while at the same time increasing the safety of its deputies.
Dukes' first donation sent the Sheriff's Office's Explorer Post to the South Carolina Association of Law Enforcement Explorers competition in Richland County. The scouts competed in several law enforcement themed events, and the Explorers brought back 1st Place in the Drug Search Warrant category.
The second donation Dukes made will be used to purchase nine Tasers to help deputies deal with fleeing or belligerent suspects. DeWitt says the Tasers will help deputies be safer, as will suspects that choose not to comply with orders made by deputies.
