Thief snatches money for charity

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Every October, One Cut Above Salon off of White Bluff Road raises money for breast cancer awareness.

But this year, they won't have all the money they raised that's because someone stole the money right off the front counter in the middle of the day.

Usually hair stylists are the ones listening to their clients' stories, but salon owner Tammy Smith has a story of her own to tell.

"I had a young individual come in and get some water from the water fountain and I said that wasn't a problem and I let him do it. He then left and came back," Smith said.

He came back for more water but what he was really after was a jar filled with money that used to sit on the front counter.

"He took the whole jar and ran off. He had a car waiting for him on the other side," said Smith.

The money in the jar for breast cancer awareness and to help pay for mammograms.

"For an individual to come in and steal donation money, it's just heartbreaking. It really is,"said Smith.

Even though there was only $30 in the jar, Smith says it's the principal.

"That's $20 or $30 that could have gone towards a mammogram. The money we donate stays here in the community to provide mammograms for those who can't afford one," said Smith.

Smith decided she wasn't going to let the thief stop them.

"I gotta have my guard up and I really don't like being that way at all. I certainly don't like to work that way," said Smith.

Smith says she filed a police report and gave police a description of the thief and the get-a-way car and now she hopes police catch the crook.

"It's so sad someone would do this,"said Smith.

"Everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer whether it be a friend or a family member. I just pray that no one in his family gets breast cancer. it's just shameful," said Smith.

This is the forth year for the breast cancer fundraiser and smith and her clients have donated thousands of dollars over the years. The salon will continue to raise money for breast cancer through Saturday and if you would like to help out you can contact the salon at One Cut Above 912.352.2240.
