BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Two former high-ranking officials at Cane Bay Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization were arrested and charged with stealing more than $14,000 in school funds, officials confirmed Friday.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, Sandra Jean Laribo, 46, of Summerville, and Sherri Ann DeLuca, 45, of Cross, are each charged with breach of trust with fraudulent intent.
Laribo is the former PTO president, and DeLuca once served as the vice president. According to sheriff's office documents, investigators allege Laribo stole more than $12,000 and DeLuca stole more than $2,000.
Both women were released on bond, according to Dan Moon, the sheriff's public information officer. The investigation into Laribo and DeLuca began last may when a report was filed in reference to possible missing funds from the PTO.
Spokeswoman for the Berkeley County School District, Kathie Sizemore, was upset by the arrests and said the district was going to pursue this case. "We're just not going to tolerate people stealing money from kids. We are going to try to recover it."
