GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - A pastor in Goose Creek is celebrating his 61st year at Calvary Church of God in Christ.
Gov. Mark Sanford recognized Bishop Johnie Johnson as a staple in the community for his 61 years at the church.
"I thank God for the time he let me stay," Johnson said. "I hope he'll let me stay a little while longer and let me enjoy it."
Johnson shows no signs of slowing down. He has been preaching at Calvary Church of God in Christ since 1949 and Sunday the 86-year-old pastor was recognized for the good he does in the community.
Sanford and Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler wrote Johnson declarations of good citizenship that thank him for all he has done.
Members of the church say that Johnson is known for helping out in any way he can. He has help people with legal trouble, paid electric bills to help out and shared his big heart.
Johnson used his trade of masonry to build the first building that housed the church he is a pastor at today
In addition to being a father and pastor, Johnson serves as the jurisdictional bishop of the Church of God in Christ for South Carolina. He turns 87 on Nov. 10.
Johnson is recovering from surgery he had two months ago. He plans to be back in the pulpit in the next couple weeks.
