GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - A Goose Creek man racked up several charges after an alleged shoplifting incident at a gas station Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
Francisco Bustamante, 60, was arrested and charged with shoplifting, resisting arrest, assaulting an officer, and first degree assault and battery, a Goose Creek police report stated.
Officers spotted Bustamante, who fit the description of an Hispanic male who had attempted to shoplift, jogging from the Sunoco gas station on North Goose Creek Boulevard. Officers ordered Bustamante to stop, the report stated, but the suspect told officers "he needed to get home."
An investigator made a second order for Bustamante to stop, "at which point Bustamante went to a full stride, lowered his body, and attempted to run over [the investigator]," the report stated. The investigator wrapped up Bustamante and took him to the ground.
In a supplemental report filed by the officer who tackled Bustamante, the officer said the suspect knew him because the two had crossed paths on other occasions.
Bustamante continued to resist officers. After several attempts to subdue him, one officer tased Bustamante. He was then placed in handcuffs and leg irons, the report stated.
The clerk at the gas station told officers she had confronted Bustamante after seeing him put a beer in his pants. Bustamante returned the beer to the cooler after being confronted and asked the clerk not to call police, the report stated. Then Bustamante pushed the clerk in the face, which caused her to fall to the floor. The clerk said she did not know the value of the beer because Bustamante had returned it before she saw the type of beer he allegedly put down his pants.
The incident was caught on surveillance cameras, but officials said the video was not immediately available.
Bustamante is being housed in the Berkeley County Detention Center.
