SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A Dorchester County man was arrested Thursday night after police responded to a burglary alarm at his home and found several marijuana plants in a bedroom.

Kevin, Ramon Smith, 28, was arrested when officers found eight marijuana plants.

When officers responded, they found Smith outside the home on Earl Street, and had him call the landlord to resolve the triggered alarm. Smith continually asked why sheriff's deputies were present, the incident report stated.

During a sweep of the home, Smith told deputies he had been a resident of the home but had since rented it out to another man. Deputies found a locked bedroom and asked Smith for a key and then asked for the current resident's contact information so they could get into the bedroom, the report stated.

When talking to deputies, the new resident confirmed that Smith was his current roommate.

Smith admitted to deputies during further questioning that he had a .40-caliber handgun concealed in his pants and then "in an excited utterance" told deputies there was marijuana in the house. He later recanted that statement, saying it was only a joke, the report stated.

The roommate then showed up at the residence and signed a search consent form. At that point, deputies learned the locked room was not the roommate's, but Smith's. The roommate informed officers that Smith did grow marijuana in his bedroom, the report stated.

With that information, Smith was arrested and deputies obtained a search warrant for the bedroom where they found eight marijuana plants growing.

Smith's father said he's disappointed with his son. "I keep talking to Kevin. In fact, me and my wife went there a couple of days ago, talked to him, tried to make sense to him," said Fred Smith. "He didn't want to hear nothing what we have to say."

Smith was transported to the St. George jail.
