CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – The State Transportation Department is considering adding toll lanes on Interstate 526 to help ease traffic congestion around Charleston.
A study will be conducted to look at ways to relieve congestion on I-526 beginning in January. The study will examine new options such as a toll lane.
The toll lanes would include about eight miles of highway from I-26 to US 17, south of Charleston.
Highway officials say that stretch of road is at capacity each day and the opening of the Boeing manufacturing facility is expected to make traffic worse.
Another option would be a high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane without a toll.
