Smoke alarm saves 4 after downtown Charleston fire

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A smoke alarm saved four people after a fire severely damaged a home in downtown Charleston early Monday morning.

According to officials, the fire broke out around 4 a.m. Monday at 54 Cannon Street. Charleston firefighters say four people were home at the time, but everyone got out safely thanks to working smoke alarms.

The structure that caught fire is two separate households and people on the first floor heard the smoke alarm and alerted everyone on the first and second floors to get out.

One person who was downstairs at the time of the fire says he saw fire coming from the air conditioning unit, and then saw it travel up the wall to the second floor and the attic.

Officials say the house has a lot of smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
