COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - AAA Carolinas named the top communities in the state for having safe roadways Wednesday. Fifteen cities across the state were honored, with five being in the Charleston Area.
Cities were broken down according to population in three categories, over 30,000, between 10,000 and 30,000, and under 10,000.
In the largest category, Mt. Pleasant, Summerville, Charleston, and Goose Creek were honored. Hanahan was named one of state's safest in the middle category.
The AAA examined the categories to find cities that actively pursue ways to enhance highway safety and make a strong commitment with extra law enforcement on the city's roads.
The number of crashes was a statistical standard used to see how successful cities are using these factors. The University of North Carolina-Charlotte provided the statistical analysis.
Representatives from each city were honored at a lunch in Columbia Wednesday.
