Deputies: Wife abandons husband on highway

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a strong armed robbery that happened Tuesday night.

Deputies arrived at about 9:15 p.m. to the Muddy Creek Road and found a 35-year-old man who said he had just been robbed.

The victim said he was traveling with his wife from Florida to Bluffton. He told deputies he and his wife had been arguing for the entire trip and decided to get out of the car on US 278 and University Park. His wife drove away and the victim walked to nearby gas station.

At the gas station, he asked a man he didn't know for a ride home.

Deputies said the victim got into the man's Mazda SUV with a female passenger. The man drove to Plantation Pointe Apartments and met up with another woman who was driving a white Volkswagen. The victim and the man got into the Volkswagen with the woman. They told the victim they needed to make a quick stop on Hilton Head before they could take him to his home in Woodbridge.

The three of them traveled to Spanish Wells Road and pulled into a driveway on Muddy Creek Road. The victim was talking to the woman passenger when he was suddenly pulled out of the car, thrown to the ground and punched and kicked by unknown suspects. The suspects took the victim's money, wallet and cell phone. The suspects then drove away in the Volkswagen, leaving the victim.

The victim went a house neaby and asked the occupants to call police. He was taken to the Hilton Head Regional Medical Center for minor injuries and was released. He admitted to police that he was intoxicated at the time he was attacked so he could not provide any details about his attackers, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies found the white Volkswagen Jetta abandoned in front of a private home. The homeowner said they did not know who it belonged to and asked to have the vehicle towed.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call Sgt. L. Albertin at 843.255.3413 or the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at 843.524.2777.
