GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WCSC/WMBF) - A woman has died after the motor home she was traveling in ran through the crossing guard arms at a railroad crossing and collided with a train in Georgetown County Monday.
Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson said a man and his wife were traveling down U.S. 521 when their midsized motor home towing a car traveled through the crossing guard arms. Witnesses in the area said the man never stopped at the crossing.
Johnson said the driver survived the accident and has been taken the Medical University of South Carolina. The driver and passenger of the RV were hearing impaired. The RV has a Florida license plate.
The train is a CSX commercial train, carrying about eight empty cars. It was on the way to pick up cargo.
Johnson also said he is not releasing the name of the victims at this time until he is able to confirm if they have family in the area.
EMS workers waiting at the railroad crossing saw the crash and tried to help the victims until firefighters arrived.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
