BLUFFTON, SC (WCSC) – Two men are in custody after neighbors noticed and reported a burglary in progress at a Bluffton home Tuesday afternoon.
Jamie Jenkins, 21, of Hilton Head and 17-year old Brian Allen of Bluffton were arrested just after 1:30 pm Tuesday on charges of second degree burglary and petit larceny related to the burglary of a University Park residence.
Beaufort County sheriff's deputies responded to Campus Lane in reference to a possible burglary in progress. A witness reported that he noticed an unknown person walking across his back patio and went outside to determine who it was. At that time, the witness observed two black males inside his neighbor's house. The witness knew his neighbor was not home, so he contacted the sheriff's office to report the suspicious activity.
The witness was able to provide a description of the vehicle he believed belonged to the suspects, and informed dispatchers when he saw the suspects leave in the vehicle.
A deputy en route to the incident location observed a gold Toyota Corolla matching the description provided by the witness traveling eastbound on US 278 near Sun City. A traffic stop was conducted and contact was made with the driver, Jenkins, and his passenger, Allen. Jenkins was determined to be driving on a suspended license and was placed under arrest. A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of two laptops and several pieces of jewelry.
Deputies responding to the residence discovered that several doors to the home were standing open, and that the home appeared to have been ransacked. Upon making contact with the homeowner, it was confirmed that the home had been burglarized. The laptops and jewelry located in the suspects' vehicle was identified as having been stolen from the Campus Lane home, and Jenkins and Allen were positively identified by witnesses as the subjects seen at the home.
Both suspects were subsequently transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center where they remain awaiting bond hearings.
