Deadly shooting in Walterboro is first of 2010

WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - A shooting in Walterboro left one woman dead Saturday night. The homicide was the first of 2010 in the City of Walterboro.

The victim, 61-year-old Annie Mack, died instantly after a single gunshot wound to the head.

Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey says Mack was shot one time in her home at 704 Black St. The shooting happened just before 10 p.m.

Officials with the Colleton County School District said Mack had been employed with the district since 1974.

The victim's daughter reported to police that the victim refused to open the door when she did not recognize the stated name of the unidentified black male. The alleged assailant then kicked in the door and fired a single gunshot.

"It appears that this was neither a random act nor a break-in that didn't go according to plan. The suspect was looking for a specific individual. Unfortunately he met Mrs. Mack, who was an innocent victim of this criminal act, apparently intended for someone else," said Walterboro Police Chief Otis Rhodes.

No suspects have been identified.

In the past year, there has been a slight decrease in the number of violent crimes and murders committed in Walterboro according to FBI reports. The reports show a total of four such incidents in 2009. This is the first in Walterboro in 2010.
