MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - Berkeley County Council decided against borrowing nearly $17 million dollars in an effort to purchase the property where the financially troubled Carolina Nurseries sits.
Council entertained the idea as a way to keep the jobs that are at stake should the nursery close.
County Supervisor Dan Davis said the issue came down to responsibility in such cases. Davis said council ultimately decided it was not the county's responsibility to buy private land. However, if the Berkeley County had bought the land, it would have kept the nursery open.
The land is valuable given its rail access to the port, which would be attractive for prospective industrial businesses that could move to Berkeley County.
The property will be auctioned December 3.
