NORTH CAROLINA (WECT) – North Carolina residents appear to use their credit cards a lot. A new report by credit management company TransUnion shows people in the state have the highest credit card debt in the continental U.S.
Overall, the report shows credit card spending is down on average across the country, but bankers say North Carolina's debt problem has been ongoing for some time. They say much of the coastal income comes from real estate and construction, both of which have suffered drastically in the tough economy.
Research shows the average debt of a North Carolina credit card holder is just under $6,000. The only two states with higher debt were Alaska and Hawaii. According to TransUnion, more than 8 million people stopped using their credit cards during the past year.
