NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - North Charleston's urban renewal efforts are attracting national attention.
The city is 1 of 8 nationwide receiving an award for municipal excellence from the National League of Cities during a meeting on Friday in Denver.
The city was named a silver winner among cities with populations between 50,001 and 150,000 for its sustainable urban revitalization project.
The project is part of a public-private effort to revitalize sections of North Charleston following the closure of the Charleston Naval Base in the mid-1990s.
North Charleston is receiving a $1,000 award that will be donated to a nonprofit group.
