CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Count Board of Elections has a new executive director.
Joseph L. Debney will take over the lead role at the board of elections after the turn of the year. He will replace Marilyn Bowers, who has served as executive director since April 2005.
Debney was unanimously voted in as the new elections chief during a Dec. 3 meeting.
"I am excited about my new challenge in Charleston County," Debney said. "I am looking forward to focusing on increasing voter turnout, educating the public about elections and voter registration, and improving the voting process in Charleston County."
Debney is currently serving as the executive director at the Dorchester County Board of Elections, but he is no stranger to the Charleston County board.
Before he took office in September 2008, he served a year as a precinct coordinator in Charleston County. Debney has also served on the state election board as a program manager where he managed the upgrade of statewide voting systems.
Debney is a 2003 graduate of Charleston Southern University.
Bowers told the elections board in Septtember she would be stepping down.
