Pearl Harbor day at Patriots Point

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) – VFW Post 10624 and the South Carolina Pearl Harbor Survivors Association will hold a Pearl Harbor Day memorial service at Patriots Point on Tuesday.

The event begins at 11 a.m. There will be at least six Pearl Harbor survivors at the memorial service on Tuesday. Those include:

-          South Carolina Pearl Harbor Survivors State Chairman Donald Ralph

-          Chapter President Thomas Ryan

-          Russell Meyne

-          Chapter Treasurer Robert Mills

-          Ed Crews

-          John W. Lawhon.

Ryan was aboard the USS Pyro, an ammunition ship, during the Pearl Harbor attacks. After the first attack, Ryan volunteered to man a motor launch and search the harbor for survivors.

Meyne was an Army private assigned to a coastal artillery unit at the mouth of a channel leading into Pearl Harbor. From his post, Meyne could see the attack on nearby Hickam Air Field.

Around 40 Pearl Harbor survivors live in SC, a number in swift decline.
