One dead after shooting in Beaufort County

HILTON HEAD, SC (WTOC) – The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a late-night shooting that left one person dead.

Officers responding to a shooting that occurred in the roadway near 50 Farmer's Club Drive at approximately 7:50 p.m. Saturday night found Alvin Sosa, 30, dead as a result of at least two rifle shots.

Gary Lee Simmons, 51, was arrested at the scene and charged with voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm during commission of a violent crime.

According to police, witnesses revealed that the shooting occurred after a confrontation between Sosa and Simmons.

Events leading up the shooting are under investigation. A forensic autopsy of Sosa will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
