CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - CHARLESTON,SC (WCSC) - The proposed 5 percent rental car fee failed to garner enough support in Tuesday night's county council meeting, officials said.
The rental car fee item died with a 1-6 vote with only Elliott Summey being the only council member to vote in favor of the fee. Council members McKeown and Darby were absent.
The Charleston County Council approved the fee earlier this year as an incentive for discount carrier Southwest Airlines to come to Charleston, but the measure was tabled when officials with the airline said it was not necessary.
Councilman Paul Thurmond requested the proposed fee appear on Tuesday night's agenda. Thurmond said he wanted to go on the record as voting against it after Southwest Airlines rejected the offer.
A source with the county council who supports the fee said the county is exploring the possibility of attracting other discount carriers and the fee may act as an incentive in the future.
