Dorchester road impact fees passed

ST. GEORGE, SC (WCSC) - A proposal to levy road impact fees in unincorporated Dorchester County became law Monday night at a county council meeting.

The law was passed 6-1.

The fees are designed to pay for road improvements by levying a charge on new buildings in the tax district. The fees are based on traffic density, so they will only be charged in the more heavily populated lower regions of the county.

Supporters of the bill said the fees are needed to handle a decade of constant growth, while opponents argued the fees would drive away the recent increase in jobs and businesses.

The new law will go into effect Feb. 1, 2011.
