Board: SC above average getting grads into college

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A college group says South Carolina is above average in sending high school graduates to college.

But the same study by the Southern Regional Education Board also ranks South Carolina's high school graduation rate at the bottom of its 16 member states.

Multiple media outlets report Wednesday that the study ranks South Carolina seventh nationally in terms of moving students from high school graduation to college. But the state Education Department says one out of 4 South Carolina students won't graduate high school on time in four years.

Outgoing Superintendent of Education Jim Rex says he supports incentives to attract the state's best teachers to its lowest performing schools and more focus on early childhood education.
