MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - More than 250 people are without a job after the Carolina Nursery was publicly auctioned off last Friday. ZZ Acquisition is the new owner of the nursery, but they don't intend on keeping the business.
Robert Johnson with ZZ Acquisitions says they have no plans of operating a nursery. He says they intend to sell the business or liquidate the inventory completely. There are still thousands of plants on the property.
About 15 people are working to upkeep the remaining plants until ZZ Acquisitions decides what to do with them.
"It's hard to be without a job this close to Christmas," a former employee says. "[The new owners] haven't told us anything about the future of the nursery."
A former employee says they've heard nothing from the new owners.
"They haven't mentioned if there's going to be another nursery or nothing like that. The only thing they've said is it's been shut down."
Robert Johnson with the company says they don't intend on keeping the business. He said ideally they would want another business to buy the property and keep it as a nursery. He said if no one decides to buy, they'll have to liquidate thousands of plants still on the property.
Until then, former employees are left jobless.
"That's what I'm looking for right now, another job, you know where I can stay in steady work and not worry about having food on the table," one employee said. "You worry about what's going to happen next. You got light bills and rent to pay."
