S.C. representative dies

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Harriet Keyserling, who represented Beaufort for 16 years in the South Carolina Legislature has died. 

 Copeland Funeral Home confirmed that Keyserling died on Friday December 10th. of undisclosed causes.

 She was 88 years old.   Keyserling served in state House from 1977 to 1993. She was known for focusing on issues involving energy, nuclear waste , education and the arts. She was also often praised for Championing women's issues.

 

  A native of New York City, Keyserling earned an economics and math degree from Barnard College. She moved to Beaufort duringWorld War II, then raised a family before beginning her political career with a term on the Beaufort County Council starting in 1975.

  She is survived by four children. Keyserling's son Billy served two terms in the same House seat she held.
