Keeping the cold air out of your home could save you money

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – As temperatures drop, the last thing you want is cold air to sneak into your home, but it happens in both old and new properties.

According to insulation expert Kris Phillips of Blown Rite Insulation Company, 85 percent of the battle can be in the attic.  He says adding on to insulation that's worn down over time can save money on your energy bill this winter.

Next, Phillips suggests making sure duct work is covered, otherwise cold air can seep all the way down into the house.  For a quick fix, "make sure you get that properly insulated."

Finally, seal your doors with weather stripping – especially the attic door.  It seems like a small thing, but Phillips says if you don't do it "you might as well just leave your door open."

Progress Energy gives rebates to some homeowners who have a properly insulated home.  Basically, if your insulation is not what it should be, you can follow steps to fix the problems and get money back.  Visit to learn more about the program.
