COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A man accused of stealing a van in Richland County and leading deputies on a chase is in jail. But he may not have known there were kittens inside.

Marion Anthony Walters was arrested Sunday evening after deputies say he crashed the stolen van. He's accused of taking it from the Animal Supply store on Garners Ferry Road Sunday afternoon.

The van belonged to the group Midlands Kittens. It had just finished up an adoption day and was packing up to leave when one of the workers noticed the van drive off.

"I heard Stormy's car door close," says Samantha Simmons with Midlands Kittens, "I looked in her car and saw someone that wasn't her and he pulled away."

Deputies say Walters first crashed into a woman who was following him on Hybe Road, but the pursuit continued. He eventually crashed the van a second time while running from authorities on Bluff Road.

Most of the kittens were found safe, but one is still missing.

Walters faces one count of driving while under suspension, simple possession of marijuana, failure to stop for lights and sirens, and assault and battery.
