CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The 150th anniversary of South Carolina's secession from the Union is being noted at Middleton Place plantation outside Charleston.
It was 150 years ago on Monday that South Carolina became the first to withdraw from the United States before the Civil War.
Events at Middleton on Monday include a reading of the Ordinance of Secession, musket firing demonstrations and displays of Civil War equipment.
House tours at the plantation include an emphasis on the Civil War collections and how the war changed forever the lives of the Middleton family.
