WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - A man police believe robbed the South Carolina Bank and Trust branch in Walterboro has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
Marvin Jerriel Bowens, 18, was arrested after he tried to avoid a DUI checkpoint Friday night. Walterboro Public Safety officers chased Bowens after a car he was driving turned around as it approached the checkpoint on Paul Street. According to police, Bowens got out of the car and ran, but was arrested after a short foot pursuit.
The bank on North Jeffries Boulevard was robbed at gunpoint around 4 p.m. Friday. The suspect got away with an undisclosed amount of money and fled in a car matching the description of the one Bowens was driving when he was taken into custody.
According to Bowens' Father Melvin Bowens, Marvin's bond was set at $275,000.
