Lawsuit filed over I-95 speed cameras in Ridgeland

BEAUFORT, SC (AP) - A lawsuit has been filed against Ridgeland, demanding the town stop using cameras to catch speeders on Interstate 95.

The Beaufort Gazette reports the lawsuit filed on behalf of 2 Florida drivers and a South Carolina motorist also asks Ridgeland to return all fines collected through the system.

Attorney Pete Strom says the cameras are illegal and create a speed trap that gives the state a black eye.

Town officials have said the cameras are legal because they are operated by an officer stationed in a vehicle nearby.

Ridgeland Mayor Gary Hodges says he will not talking about the pending lawsuit.
