Laurens County deputy shoots man at traffic stop

CLINTON, S.C. (AP) - Investigators say a Laurens County deputy shot a man after he tried to run over officers during a traffic stop.

Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain told WYFF-TV that officers were trying to stop the man around 10 p.m. Thursday after he turned his car around at a license checkpoint in Newberry County.

Chastain says the suspect's car was found about 30 minutes later, but he refused to pull over, running down an embankment as he tried to get on Interstate 26 near Clinton.

The sheriff says the suspect then tried to run over the officers as they approached the car to arrest him

Chastain says a deputy fired at the suspect, grazing his head. The sheriff says the man should recover.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.
